Built in Hong Kong in 1962 the ‘Hai Ma’ (Chinese for Sea Horse) was brought to Auckland in 1988 by a shipping company. She was well known by locals who hired her over the years for corporate events in and around the Hauraki Gulf until she was offered for sale in April 2006.
Purchased by her current owner Sam Lamb the 14m long and 4.2m wide vessel was transported with the top deck cut off and lowered down over the mid-ship section, so she would fit under power lines.
She now graces the waters of Lake Taupo, adding a whole new ‘wine & dine’ experience to visitors and locals.
After intensive restoration work and a commercial refit she finally went back into the water in December 2006 to be ready for the summer holiday season.
The Junk is surveyed for approximately 30 people. The Junk has 5 different entertainment deck spaces; 3 covered and 2 open tops.
She remains New Zealand’s only authentic Chinese Junk.
